UHS Track team competed against Irvine and Corona del Mar High School on Thursday in a tri-meet after the previous meet was cancelled due to rain.
Boys Varsity lost to both schools, and Girls Varsity won against Irvine, but lost to CdM. Thursday marked the second league meet of the season.
Many UHS athletes were satisfied with their performances in their respective categories.
One sophomore runner for example, Ryan Duffy set a personal record in the mile, finishing third with a time of 4:44.
“I like the mile because it’s the perfect balance of speed and endurance,” Duffy said.
The Girls Varsity mile runner, freshman Collette Lowengrub set a personal best of 5.17 winning first, and sophomore Avery Klauke finished third in the same event with a time of 5.37.
Senior soccer player Jeremy Koo returned to track as UHS’s top Boys Varsity 400m runner winning the event with a time of 5:21, and his 4×100 relay with a time of 44:04.
“It was really hard coming back to track because the soccer season was really long so I felt pretty burned out afterwards,” Koo said. “Doing well in today’s meet helped me regain my fitness and confidence in running.”
Senior sprinter Faris Quasi won both of his events in the 200m and 100m with respective times of 23.45 and 11.36.
Girls varsity sprinter Sara Sussman swept her heat in both the 400m and 800m, with respective times of 1.00 and 2:27.
Junior Charlie Feuerborn placed second in the 110 hurdles event with a time of 16.69 and junior Ray Corpus finished third.
Junior Evan Parsier placed first in the high jump and junior Sam Kammerman placed second in the same heat.
Varsity jumper junior Sandy Zhang set a personal best of 13-11 in the triple jump.
“I think being in jumps is really a terrific experience because you want to improve and get better for yourself,” Zhang said. “There’s a tremendous sense of achievement as you see yourself improve after practicing jump after jump.”
Shot putters juniors Harini Venkataganesh and Jamie Kim placed first and third respectively in the shot put. Venkataganesh also won second in the discus throw.
Boys Frosh/Soph team tied with Irvine for first with 63 points, and the Girls Frosh/Soph achieved first winning by more than 20 points with a score of 73. The girls JV team was victorious against both CDM and Irvine, as were the boys JV.
Distance Captain, senior Christian Go was overall satisfied with how Uni performed in the meet.
“We kept fighting,” Go said. “I don’t think anyone was concerned about the score everyone just kept doing what they were supposed to do.”
