“Snow White” was released worldwide on March 21, 2025. With director Marc Webb and Rachel Zegler starring as Snow White, the movie is a live-action adaptation of the classic fairytale.
The original film has Snow White gaining her name from the fairness of her skin. However, the name was spawned in this adaptation because she survived a snowstorm as an infant. Despite changes some may find questionable, the adaptation was not as horrible as many had believed it would be. Webb was able to preserve many iconic scenes and do them justice. However, the makeup, costume and desire to appeal to a modern audience made the movie feel like another bullet point on the growing list of failed live-action adaptations.
Regarding performances, Zegler did as much as she could with the materials provided to her. No one can deny the talent she holds, showcased throughout the film through her acting and singing. However, it was overpowered many times by the bad hair, Halloween-like costume and lackluster script. One cannot deny, though, Webb’s ability to bring the classic Disney magic feel to the screen. The CGI for the dwarves was a little off-putting, but the scenes in the woods gave a whimsical vibe that one seeks in a Disney film.
On the other hand, Gal Gadot as the evil queen was one of the worst performances I’ve seen all year. She put no emotion behind her lines and portrayed no ability to sing with the range and gravitas necessary for a character as iconic as the evil queen. I think her casting was one of the film’s worst decisions and severely harmed the end product.
The script also fell short, with jokes failing to land and cliches infesting the dialogue. Although they attempted to make this adaptation more modern, it lacked the fairytale vibe throughout the dialogue. This is an issue prevalent in Disney live-action films—the changes made are undesirable.
Other than the songs from the original movie, the music was forgettable. The songs lacked the catchy magic and excitement usually seen in Disney songs, especially Disney princess songs.
Overall, the film fell short of what it should have been with uninspired casting and poor performances. Although there were some satisfactory elements, like the atmosphere crafted and the performance from Zegler, the film failed to do the original movie justice, such a classic deserved.
