With the season’s changing, the time is ripe for new habits, comfort activities and new goals to fulfill. For many UHS students, spring is a highly stressful period, especially with both AP and final exams approaching before the end of the year. Listed below are five enjoyable springtime movies to relax in between study sessions.
“A Bug’s Life” (1998) is a longtime fan-favorite Disney classic for families and is a perfect movie to watch during the spring. This film follows the story of Flik, a daring and confident ant, and his journey to recruit help to protect the colony of ants he resides in against an army of grasshoppers looking to steal stored food. This movie is available on Disney+.
Switching to the human world, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986) is a comedy classic for many, especially amongst older teenagers and adults. Rated PG-13, this movie takes place in the suburbs of Chicago, with its main characters, three high schoolers, trekking into the city center to seize the day in their way: cutting high school classes. This does not go unnoticed by their high school principal. This movie is available on Netflix.
Sticking to the high school theme, “10 Things I Hate About You” (1999) is a well-established classic in the high school movie genre. This teen romance-comedy film, set in the Seattle metropolitan area, is rated PG-13. This teen romance involves a deal between sisters to get a faux date, since the younger isn’t allowed to date until the older, unintentionally causing true romance to ensue. Much like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” this film is available for purchase on Disney+ and Apple TV.
Going far more classic, “Pride and Prejudice” (2005) is a modern interpretation of renowned author Jane Austen’s 1813 novel. The movie provides viewers with a more sophisticated and composed love story. Following the characters of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, the film illustrates their journey to becoming wed while exploring themes of social class and societal expectations in nineteenth-century England. This film is available for purchase on Netflix and Peacock.
Wrapping up this list, “The Secret Garden” (1993), rated PG, is a more solemn movie. This film follows the story of Mary Lennox, a young orphaned girl who discovers a walled-off, beautiful garden. This film is available for purchase on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
