“Nobody 2,” directed by Timo Tjahjanto, was released on Aug. 15 and proved to be a thrilling yet occasionally underwhelming story. Upon the film’s official trailer release in May of this year, many fans of the hit 2021 film “Nobody” were excited to see the sequel to the incredibly entertaining original.
The film follows Hutch Mansell, played by Bob Odenkirk, who takes his family on a “relaxing” vacation in a desperate attempt to restore their relationship and take a break from his demanding job as an assassin. This film features other notable performances, such as esteemed actor Christopher Lloyd as David Mansell and Colin Hanks as Abel.
Throughout the whole film, Hutch and David stand out due to their contrasting personalities. Hutch serves as a character with lots of emotional depth, while David stands as a comedic figure that balances the emotional and brutal themes of the film with funny moments that provide entertainment.
This film delivers a story that is filled with both emotionally deep and action-packed scenes. Odenkirk does a fantastic job portraying an emotionally heavy character who is desperate to repair his family during a vacation while also having to continue with the occupation that drove them apart.
The film’s action-induced scenes are pleasing to watch due to the erratic camera movement that follows the flow of the fights, as well as the variety of situations in which such fights take place. While the film’s plot appears family-friendly on the surface, it does not shy away from displaying the brutal nature of characters fighting for their survival.
Where this film falls a bit short is in its pacing, which seemed quite predictable at times by following a “reluctant hero” cliche. I believe that the weakest part of the film is the reveal of the story’s final villain, portrayed by Sharon Stone. Her introduction not only happened very late in the film with no buildup, but the character itself received no backstory or motive and was instead hastily introduced. Aside from this, the climax of the film offers a very entertaining fight sequence, which takes place in the unique setting of a carnival and includes remarkable performances from Odenkirk and Lloyd.
As far as this film goes, “Nobody 2” was a fun film to watch thanks to its cleverly choreographed fight sequences and the balance between comedic and emotional scenes. Although “Nobody 2” falls short in certain areas, such as its predictable plot and underwhelming final villain, the film ultimately proved to be a thrilling piece of cinema. I recommend “Nobody 2” to fans of the 2021 film or anyone who loves a good story combined with entertaining action sequences.
