University High School’s music department held its annual Fall Band Concert on Oct. 15. The concert featured all four UHS band ensembles, each performing an impressive selection of pieces that fell under a fall theme.
An enjoyable aspect of the concert was its pleasant, welcoming atmosphere. The Fall Band Concert included brief pauses between the ensembles’ performances, showcasing a sense of teamwork between the performers as they set up. A description of each piece and the story behind it was read aloud before the piece was performed, something I believe added to the performance’s impact.
“There was definitely a lot of craziness going on with such a busy event,” senior and band member Matthew Tucker said. “But being able to play on stage with all my friends was a memorable experience I will cherish forever.”
Visually, the concert’s setup helped enhance the audience’s experience. The stage was framed with several large panels behind the performers and was illuminated with red, orange and yellow lights, which created an autumnal mood.
The music for each ensemble was expertly picked. Each piece utilized the available instruments, allowing for each instrumental section to have its own outstanding moments. While some pieces were calm and required soft handling of the instruments, others were intense and coordinated, leaving me in awe at the passion and dedication displayed by the performers.
“My favorite part of being in the Fall Band Concert was being a part of a passionate community, interacting with helpful peers, and being able to contribute to what I am passionate about,” freshman and band member Mateo Favela Reyes said.
Out of all the captivating pieces performed at the concert, “Un Cafecito,” by Dennis Llinás, definitely stood out. This piece served as the finale of the concert and was an outstanding performance that left me in awe. This piece was advertised on the concert’s posters, and it is safe to say that my expectations were greatly exceeded. “Un Cafecito” was a long piece that transitioned from soft and suspenseful to thunderous and energetic. The piece also featured a handful of memorable solos that showcased the musical prowess of different performers. This piece was undoubtedly the highlight of the Fall Band Concert for me, and it served as an incredible conclusion.
“‘Un Cafecito’ has been special to me because of all the funny memories I have of practicing the piece in band,” Tucker said. “It has also challenged me and pushed me to become an even better musician.”
Overall, attending the Fall Band Concert was a remarkable experience. The concert has left me anticipating what the music department has in store for its future events. If you are a fan of music or live performances, I strongly recommend attending a UHS band concert, as it showcases the level of passion many students have for music.
“The bands are a great way to express yourself, learn new skills and find like-minded people,” Tucker Said. “The concerts are also fun events where we get to celebrate all the hard work from our many students in the instrumental music program.”
