On Friday, March 7, University High School’s (UHS) boys and girls swimming teams swept the Irvine City Relay Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center. This was the 10th title in a row for the girls
team and the first time the boys team won after losing the title just last year. UHS won the title after beating Beckman High School (BHS), Irvine High School (IHS), and Northwood High School (NHS). The girls earned 340 points, and the boys earned 390. This was the teams’ first meet of the season. Each school entered two teams, an “A” team and a “B” team, in each event for each level (JV and Varsity).
The girls team finished with 340 points, beating second-place IHS, which finished with 284 points. The point values were the combined scores of the JV and Varsity teams. Varsity girls began with a third place in the 400 individual medley (IM) relay, but went on to win the 300 free relay, the 400 breast relay, the 400 fly relay, and the 400 back relay. Although JV girls began the meet with a disqualification of the A team in the 400 IM relay, they bounced back to place first in the 200 fly relay, the 200 back relay, and the 400 free relay. They also swept the 200 breast relay and 200 medley relay, winning first and second.
The boys team finished with 390 points to win over NHS, which finished in second place with 394 points. Varsity boys won every event and swept the 400 IM, the 400 breast, the 400 back, and the 200 medley, placing first and second in those events. JV boys chipped in with wins in the 200 Breast and the 200 back.
In total, UHS won 730 points over NHS, which won 476 points.
The team’s next meet is on March 18 at UHS against Laguna Hills High School.
