UHS boys varsity rang in their first league victory on Thursday, January 8 against Woodbridge (WHS) with a score of 1-0.  Adrenaline ran high on both teams and the intensity of the game never faltered. The ball was on both offensive sides equally throughout the majority of the match.
Defenders Adam McDermott (Sr.), Evan Mouchard (Fr.), Adam Eldefrawy (Fr.) and Daniel Moreno (So.) created a tough front against WHS’s offense, preventing WHS from scoring.
The centers made many successful connecting passes to the strikers, providing opportunities for UHS’s offense to score a goal. Marcos Fernandez (Sr.), Indiana Fuller (Sr.), Aidan Galasetti (Sr.) and Tommy Levasseur (Sr.) played strong offense and were a major threat to Woodbridge’s defense. The game was tied 0-0 after the first half.
During the second half, UHS got a corner kick and Levasseur took it. Defender McDermott came up from defense and kicked the ball into the goal, giving UHS its first goal of the match. The game ended with a final score of 1-0.
When asked how he thought the team performed, Levasseur said, “I’m happy we got our first win. It was important that we won that first game to set the momentum for the season. We know we could’ve scored a lot more though with all of the opportunities we got so we’re looking to put more in during our next game. Overall though, we did what we had to do.”
Fernandez also spoke highly of his team’s first match saying, “This win has us all pumped to win league and move onto CIF. I have high hopes for our season and I know our coaches do too.”
