Girls Varsity Golf set a new school record in another juggernaut-esque performance. Coming into the game at the top of the county leaderboard, the Trojans once again proved their skills by dismantling the Sea Kings 176-200, their lowest total in UHS history. Their previous lowest score was 178.
Reigning OC Varsity girls golf athlete of the week Samantha Cabunag (Jr.) shot a 36, and team member Eugene Rhee (Jr.) did the same. However, the team was led by a magnificent 31 put up by Nodoka Honda (Soph.), marking the lowest score in UHS girls golf history.
“It was special especially because it was against CdM and we had a lot of pressure on us,” Honda said.
The game was quite a big win for the Trojans, as the Sea Kings have one of the premier young talents in the country, Alyaa Abdulghany. By the end of the game, Abdulghany had matched Honda’s score of 31. Despite this, the Trojans’ depth helped them shoot low scores all around and defeat the Sea Kings, who have slipped down the rankings to 6th place after going 1-4 in league.
“Winning against CdM gave us a boost of confidence because we had lost to them previously this year and last year,” Captain Kelly Huang (Sr.) said,“This win helps motivate us to win league this year.”
The Trojans carried their momentum from the week prior, in which they won the Long Beach Wilson Invitational as the only team which broke 300. UHS shot a 298; the closest score to them was Troy’s 306. They have now won the tournament for the second time, shaving two strokes off of their score of 300 from last year. Cabunag won the individual championship by going 2-under-par on the par 74 course. Although she finished tied for the lead at the end of the 18-holes, she won by having the best score in the back nine, going 3-under.
UHS now looks toward a double header against unseeded Northwood and third-ranked Beckman.
