The Girls Varsity Volleyball team defeated Irvine High School 3-1 on the team’s final home game. This victory would be their second over Irvine this season.
Both teams started off strong, matching up evenly through the first set with UHS pushing through to win 25-21. Communication appeared to be a consistent problem for both teams, resulting in the slight four point margin.
The Trojans dominated the Vaqueros 25-15 in the second set, with the help of good defense by blockers Sophie Lawrence (Sr.) and Jaylee Morse (Sr.).
In the third set the Trojans lost 25-19.
However, UHS regained its stride in the fourth set, winning with a score of 25-22 and taking the win against Irvine. Both teams played intensely, however the Trojans overpowered Irvine through the placement of several key shots and blocks in order to win their final home game of the season.
One key play occurred mid-set when a perfect pass was made by setter and defensive specialist Lauren Cho (Fr.) to setter GelinaRae Linsangan (Jr.), who flicked the ball back to middle blocker Alma Entesari (Sr.) as she spiked it to score a point.
The game was the team’s Senior Night, the seniors’ final home game playing as Trojans.
“I think that it was sad that this was the last time we’ll play in front of a full crowd of Trojan army in our home gym,” middle blocker Sophie Lawrence (Sr.) said, “but seeing that we still have 4 more away league games, we’re all still excited for the rest of the season”
This win places the girls with an overall record of 3-9 and a league record of 2-4.
“Yes, it’s sad knowing that it will never truly be the same [without the seniors], but it was great getting that final win to end out our home games for the season” setter GelinaRae Linsangan (Jr.) said.
The Trojans next game is away against rival school Woodbridge on Thursday, October 13.
