A chance at redemption against UHS’s rival Peninsula High School was lost 7-11 on Wednesday October 12 for Girls Varsity Tennis. In the previous year, the Trojans had lost as well by the same margin. Going into the game, University was ranked fifth in CIF while Peninsula was ranked fourth.
Captains Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) and Kayla Agustin (Jr.) were paired in the doubles section of the match. The duo won two of the three doubles games they competed in with scores 6-4 and 6-3, respectively.
Other doubles matches were played by Adriana Pinto (So.), paired with Vicki Li (Sr.), and Tiffany Markus (Jr.), paired with Jacklyn Yoon (So.). The two pairs each won one game.
The singles team consisted of sisters Halla Alajeely (Sr.) and Kamar Alajeely (So.) along with Dana Feng (So.). They contributed a total of three points to the UHS team.
“I think that the [the captains] did a great job organizing the team and leading the team” said Coach John Kessler (Athletic Dept.). The coach hopes to send this University High team to CIF’s this year for the fifth consecutive year.
“After losing a lot of our seniors last year, I feel like our team has exceeded many people’s expectations by practicing hard everyday and even on days off,” said Snigdha Vayalapadu (Jr.). “We’ve fixed and improved many different skills which will definitely give us a good shot at going far in CIF.”
In the Pacific Coast League, UHS Girls Varsity Tennis is ranked second behind CdM. This next game against the top ranked rivals is at home on Tuesday, October 18 and is anticipated to be a highly competitive match.
