Girls Varsity Tennis lost against OC rivals Corona del Mar on Tuesday, October 18 with a score of 5-13. Coincidentally, they lost their first match against the Sea Kings with the same score of 5-13 three weeks before. Going into this game, UHS was ranked second in Orange County while CdM was ranked first.
Girls Tennis was confident after their close matchup previously in the season.
“Since some of their top players are injured we have a better chance because we were pretty close last time,” said singles player Dana Feng (So.) prior to the game. “I feel like our matchups are pretty equal.”
In the middle of the first round, the Trojans faced adversity as their singles starter Halla Alajeely (Sr.) cramped up while down 0-3. Captain Sasha Iraniha (Jr.) stepped up and substituted for her.
After the first round, the Trojans were down 2-4, but remained positive going into the next round. However, the Trojans were unable to close the gap and only secured one win in the second round, resulting in a score of 3-9. The Trojans won two more sets in doubles by partners Kayla Agustin (Jr.) and Captain Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) along with Jacklyn Yoon (So.) and Tiffany Markus (Jr.) in the last round, bringing the final score to 5-13.
“I think we could have put some more heart into the match,” Captain Kayla Agustin (Jr.) said. “Even though they were the stronger team, we could have been more pumped and excited.”
UHS plays Woodbridge next at home on Monday, October 24.
