In a very close matchup away from home, Girls Varsity Tennis narrowly defeated Peninsula with a total score of 10-8. Peninsula was ranked ahead of UHS at fourth in the CIF-SS rankings while UHS was ranked fifth. As a result UHS moves on to CIF semifinals and qualifies for regionals. Even though Girls Varsity had lost 7-11 to Peninsula earlier in the season, they were able to break their losing streak against them and came away with a victory for the first time in five years.
The UHS doubles teams impressively finished with a collective score of 7-2. Doubles pair Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) and Tiffany Markus (Jr.) dominated their matchup, sweeping the set with a perfect score of 6-0. Another doubles pair performed exceptionally with captains Sasha Iraniha (Jr.) and Kayla Agustin (Jr.) winning 6-4 twice.
Though the singles team struggled with a tough loss of 3-6, singles players Halla Alajeely (Sr.) and sister Kamar Alajeely (So.) dominated their matchups, contributing all of the three singles points that UHS had. Kamar Alajeely swept her first round match for a clean 6-0 set while Halla Alajeely won twice with scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
“Every person in this match worked so hard from the beginning to the end,” said Snigdha Vayalapadu (Jr.) “It was close but UNI’s teamwork and energy reached a whole new level which helped us seal the win against Peninsula,”
Girls Tennis will advance to the CIF semifinals against CIF second ranked Campbell Hall this Wednesday, November 9.
