Girls Varsity Tennis lost to the Torrey Pines Falcons 3-4 in the quarterfinals of the CIF State Championships on Friday, November 18.
After making it to the semi-finals of CIF, the Trojans were invited to the Regional Competition at the Claremont Club. In the first round, the Trojans faced Torrey Pines from San Diego, who were coming in undefeated this season.
Instead of playing three rounds, each match was two out of three sets and just one round. Furthermore, an additional singles player played, allowing a total of four singles and three doubles from each team. The Trojans had a rough start, losing all but two of the first sets in every match. Halla Alajeely (Sr.) secured a win at number one singles, helping to boost the confidence of the team.
“Each and every person was fighting with heart out there and I couldn’t be more proud of our team,” Alajeely said.
At number three doubles, Adriana Pinto (So.) and Vicki Li (Sr.) dominated with winning scores of 6-2, 6-1, bringing the Trojans their second win. Both of the other doubles teams had lost the first set, but they both managed to win the second set. In a close third set, Kayla Agustin (Jr.) and Sasha Iraniha (Jr.) were narrowly defeated 4-6, giving the Falcons the win they needed to advance to the next round.
In a grueling three hour match, Ashlyn Wang (Sr.) and Tiffany Markus (Jr.) defeated the number one doubles team with scores of 4-6, 6-4, and 7-5 to secure the third victory for the Trojans.
The Trojans ended their season with a record of 21-4.
