Varsity Girls Soccer was defeated 1-4 in their first preseason game against Mater Dei High School on Thursday, December 1.
Mater Dei has a strong soccer team that won the 2015 CIF Division 1 Championship, which made them favorites coming into this game. “This [was] a tough game,” Coach Ignacio Cid (Athletics Dept.) said. However, this defeat in the preseason game gave the team more motivation to excel in the season.
“This year we have a pretty strong team with a lot of talent,” Leyna Wood (Jr.) said. “There’s still things that we need to work on, but we are focused and willing to put in the work.
The team scored one point in the beginning of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Mater Dei then scored the next goal to tie it up at the half 1-1. However, during the first half Paige Metayer (Jr.) was given the responsibility of kicking a penalty kick after a Mater Dei foul in the penalty box. She was unable to capitalize on the golden opportunity that would have given them a 2-1 lead and possibly more momentum going into the halftime break.
Despite this setback, captain Kiana Ghamari (Sr.) feels “we are ready to make a change in girls soccer, and this is the best team that I have all of four years. I am excited to see big things come.”
The girls will have their second game against Oceanview High School on December 8.
