In their first league game, the Varsity Baseball Team squared off against long time rival Woodbridge Warriors at Ryan Lemming, home field for the Warriors. The boys in blue won by a score of 9-1 thanks to an outstanding performance from star pitcher Jacob Collins (Sr.).
In the first six innings, Collins kept the Warriors to three hits, zero runs, and struck out nine batters. With almost half of his outs coming from strikeouts, Jacob looked to finish the Warriors off in the final inning of the game. He allowed only one run before ending the game with one last strikeout to lead the Trojans to their first league win  of the year.
Commenting on his performance, Collins said, “It just felt like everything was going right for me. Getting on top early in the counts really helped me throw more offspeed that was able to get me the majority of my strikeouts.”
The first run of the game came on a sacrifice bunt from Jake Rome (So.) to score Kahi Rodrigues (Jr.) early in the second inning.
The next inning started off with a walk and a big hit from Rodriguez to score Andie Masotto (Jr.). The Trojans would score one more time on a couple of key hits to put University on top 3-0.
The following innings were quiet until the top of the sixth when the boys in blue found their rhythm. With key hits, and working counts after counts, the Trojans managed to start a rally that resulted in eight base runners and six runs.
With patience in every at bat, the Warriors pitching was starting to get rattled and had shown signs of fatigue. With the sixth being a big inning, pitching changes occurred twice in the Trojans big inning.
One player that had a big day offensively came from the big shortstop himself Andie Masotto. Massotto went 2-2 with two singles, two walks, two runs, and two runs batted in.
After being asked how he was able to be successful at the plate, Massotto said, “I knew they had a solid pitcher to start the game so I focused on getting my foot down and having a short, quick swing to the ball.”
Having beaten the Warriors 9-1, the Trojans came out guns blazing and for the most part pulled off an upset. The upset not having been beating the Warriors, but doing it in the fashion that the boys in blue were able to do last friday.
Boys Baseball is scheduled to play the Beckman Patriots at home on Tuesday. The Patriots having been ranked third in O.C. (OC Varsity), Beckman is the number one team to beat in the Pacific Coast League. David Schlomovitz (Jr.) is set to start and will hopefully lead the Trojans past Beckman and to a 2-0 start in league.
