UHS hosted the PCL Track Preliminaries last Tuesday, May 2. The Trojans will be represented by 10 runners at PCL Finals who qualified in prelims.
The sprinters are sending four boys and four girls, all capable of possibly winning their races at finals. Paige Metayer (Jr.) is the favorite to win the 400 and 800 meter sprints, as she had the best time in both events at prelims. Jeremy Koo (Jr.) had the third best time in the 400 meter sprint, with a time of 51.67 seconds. In comparison, the top time at prelims was only 0.57 seconds faster. Harry Baker (Sr.) is also the favorite to win the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints, as he won those events at prelims with times of 11.07 seconds and 22.47 seconds, respectively.
Two hurdlers are also going to finals. Daria Shkel (Jr.) placed third in the 100 meter hurdles and second in the 300 meter hurdles. Charlie Feuerborn (So.) stole the ninth and final spot in the 110 meter hurdles, winning by a marginal 0.04 seconds.
It is a fantastic result for the boys, who have had good runners all year but just haven’t closed out meets. Despite going 1-5 this year, the team still has a good chance to send runners to CIF.
Varsity jumpers did not participate in preliminaries. All jumpers in varsity automatically qualified for PCL finals, presumably because of the lack of jumpers.
The team is very much looking forward to watching its teammates run at PCL finals. Christian Go (Jr.) said, “It’s pretty exciting to see them race for those spots[;] they have trained hard up to this point and it will be fun to watch them compete.”
Those ten runners, along with the varsity jumpers, will now look forward to PCL Finals on Friday, May 5.
