Boys Varsity football took a tough loss against their long time rival Woodbridge 0-35 on Friday, October 19. This put the team at 2-7 including preseason. Despite having a seven year loss streak to Woodbridge, Football had hopes to change things this year.
However, after the first half, it was clear where the direction of the game was headed.
“I felt disappointed after the game because we played our rival Woodbridge, and even though we knew how important the game was, it didn’t go the way we imagined,” senior Eddie Castillo said.
The statistics of the game favored Woodbridge, with more than double the yards of the Trojans, at 395 total yards. The third down conversion ratio for the Trojans was also very low, at one in eleven.
“We can definitely work on our playscheme; a lot of our plays were easily stopped with simple adjustments,” senior Jared Harlan said. “We couldn’t get the ball moving offensively and defensively we gave up on large pass plays.”
The need for better pass coverage and an overall better defense was emphasized by the many large pass plays made by Woodbridge.
“We didn’t play to our expectations and we did not play so well, but the hopes for the season is to beat Beckman since it’s the last game,” junior Noah Nejad said.
After the team’s performance against Woodbridge and in this season, many improvements need to be made. The team’s poor performance this season could be attributed to the change in coaching, but many of the younger players have optimism for the next season.
“We didn’t run the ball effectively, we didn’t block for our quarterback, we had nothing to work with, and we were outplayed,” junior Branton Lucas said. “Next year is going to be different… it will be my last year as a Trojan and I’m going do anything in my power for the team to have a CIF appearance. That means pushing them during off season and pushing them on the field.”
The final game of the season will be at home against Beckman High School on Friday, October 26.
