You have probably been exposed to trendy American foods through a variety of social media posts about “pumpkin spice lattes” or “rainbow grilled cheese.” The Chung Chun hotdog is probably an unfamiliar name to most Americans as it is a street food that has gained much popularity in South Korea. One location that allows for us to try this foreign trendy food is Chung Chun Rice Hotdog.
Chung Chun Rice Hotdog is located inside of Zion Market next to the bakery Paris Baguette. Although the restaurant is easily accessible to anyone in Irvine, its location inside of a supermarket makes seating very limited and cramped. In addition, the location is quite simple and does not have the most appealing aesthetic.
In terms of customer service, Chung Chun Rice Hotdog does not stand out in any way. Typically people just order their food and pick up their food when their order number is announced. Although wait times to order a hotdog can reach up to thirty minutes on busy days, you will usually be able to make your order within five to ten minutes of getting in line. Additionally, orders usually take around five minutes to complete. This number can increase however, depending on how much food is ordered.
Aside from the fact that the Chung Chun hotdog is actually a corn dog, you might be wondering what makes this dog different from other corn dogs. The most notable characteristic of any Chung Chun hotdog is the batter and coating. Opposed to a classic corn dog’s cornbread batter, the Chung Chun hot dog uses rice flour batter and panko crumbs to allow for an extra crispy bite. Usually, the hotdogs are dusted with sugar for a sweet kick. In addition, this dog isn’t only limited to a sausage deep fried in batter and can have components ranging from mozzarella cheese fillings to squid ink coatings.
When I went to Chung Chun Rice Hotdog with my family, we ordered a Chung Chun Hotdog for $1.99 and a Mozzarella Hotdog for $2.99. The Chung Chun Hotdog was very good as the savoriness of the sausage was balanced by the sweetness of the sugar dusted onto the coating. In addition, the deep fried rice flour and panko coating were extremely crispy and enhanced the dining experience. If the Chung Chun Hotdog was “very good”, the Mozzarella Hotdog was nearing transcendence. The cheese pull of this dog alone would be enough to make the mouth of any foodie water. Both hotdogs could be paired with a variety of sauces provided by the restaurant, including ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, spicy mayo, and mango habanero sauce.
Although the location of Chung Chun Rice Hotdog may not be ideal for dining, the great food and cheap prices make this restaurant a place that anyone could enjoy. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who has time and is willing to try new foods.
ChungChun Rice Hotdog is located on 4800 Irvine Blvd and is open 11:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. daily.
