With their 16-5 win, the boys’ morale had returned and they were ready to face Mission Viejo. After their loss against Redondo Union, boys water polo were aiming for redemption in the battle with Laguna. And now they are looking to keep the winning streak alive as they look towards their future matches.
The teams seemingly impenetrable defense contributed to their win against Laguna.
“We had a very good defense… the other team holding the ball [for] a very long time… and the less time the ball moves, the less opportunities they have to beat our defense ,” Coach Briggs said.
With all of the hard work pumped into this game, there was still room for the team to improve upon.
“Incorporat[ing] all of our players into an offense. We need to deal with… pressure passing,” Briggs said.
By improving on their pressure passing, the strategy of keeping the ball away from the defense until your team needs it, the team will be able to improve on their synergy. There were definitely a handful of members that proved hard work can truly pay off.
“[Junior] Liam Horan [has] made a big improvement… and improvement from [senior] Reily Kirkpatrick. [Juniors] Matt Wallin and Stewart Campbell are always very strong anchors for our team,” Briggs said.
Horan led the team to their victory by giving their team a significant lead above Laguna. With the team having dedicated and very strong recurring members, the team can set their sights on their goals.
“Trying to play like a division 3 team, make it to CIF… [and] advance farther into CIF, and letting [the players] see their hard work throughout the year,” Briggs said.
The team’s next game is on September 17 located and against Costa Mesa.
