Following the ASB Primary elections on March 13, the UHS Senior Class Student Council hosted final elections during the week of March 22. Elections culminated in the annual Election Convention, a student election for the seven ASB positions, held in the theater on Friday, March 27. Student representatives, selected through an application process, familiarized themselves with each candidate over the course of the week and finally voted for ASB positions at Election Convention. The elected ASB positions for the 2026-27 school year are Ayla Agahi for President, Ethan Shapiro for Vice President, Krish Prem as Clubs Commissioner, Charlie Carmichael for Boys’ Sports Commissioner, So Nomura for Girls’ Sports Commissioner, Dev Batra for Student Activities Coordinator and Nikan Rafi for Spirit and Rally Commissioner.
During the convention, candidates gave 30-second impromptu speeches in response to prompts related to their positions. For example, the Spirit and Rally Commissioners were asked to directly hype up the crowd. This was a critical opportunity for candidates to share their personal experiences and motivation.
”When I first came to UHS, it was clubs that helped me feel more connected and gave me a place to belong,” Clubs Commissioner Prem said. “I ran for Clubs Commissioner so I can bring clubs to the forefront of Uni’s culture and help everyone feel connected to it.”
The candidates were not the only people working hard to prepare for Election Convention. Representatives were divided into 50 groups of about five students each, assigned a U.S. state, and were responsible for creating a unique flag for their state. These flags would eventually be presented at the convention, and the state with the best flag, as judged, received recognition.
“Creating the flags together with my state was really fun,” sophomore Representative Nichal Bhandaklar said. “I was really proud to see our state flag presented at the convention.”
After the final voting process, the winning candidates for next year were recognized with a medal, a ceremony and wide applause. They will be trusted with the crucial responsibility of managing UHS next year.
“I am very optimistic for the coming year with a great Elected 7 team by my side,” Vice President Shapiro said. “This role felt like a natural stepping stone from last year, and I live for the responsibility that I have been given.”
Overall, this year’s Election Convention was a successful event. The stories shared and the strong class spirit present reinforced this event as a significant UHS tradition.
