On October 2 and September 30, University High School (UHS) girls tennis played against Corona del Mar (CdM) and Beckman High School (BHS), defeating both.
The team played CdM and defeated the Sea Kings 13-5 on October 2. Alyssa Rudin (Jr.) scored higher than her opponent in all three of her single games with scores of 6-1, 6-4, and 6-0. She was proud of her team’s victory and said, “I think the whole team played really well today, singles did a great job of coming through in some tough sets and doubles really held their own against CdM’s good doubles teams! And we really proved that we deserve to be #1 in the county.”
Doubles partners Michelle Maddox (Jr.) and Becca Kim (Sr.) made a great comeback in their doubles match, going from 1-5 to a winning score of 7-5. Tiffany Madlambayan (Jr.) and Ashlyn Wang (So.) also defeated their opponents during their doubles match with a scores of 6-3 their first match and 7-5 in their second. Tiffany Madlambayan (Jr.) said, “Starting against CdM was initially scary for me, but after my partner and I won our first round match, she gave me many reasons to be brave.”
On September 30, the team demolished Beckman High School 17-1, giving the team their second League win. Yuki Asami (Sr.) said, “Singles was really dominating yesterday [September 30]. Celine Gruaz (Sr.), Alyssa Rudin and I played two rounds each and we didn’t drop a single game. After our second round, we subbed out all the singles. Our doubles also swept without dropping a set.” Becca Kim said, “[The] team is really working hard together. We are trying to keep each other mentally strong and forward-thinking. We love challenges, and our biggest one will be against Peninsula, so we’re excited to take them on.”
UHS varsity girls tennis maintains an undefeated season record of 10-0. The team’s next match is the Game of the Week on October 7 against Northwood High School.
