The University High School (UHS) football team played the Beckman High School (BHS) Patriots at the Homecoming football game on Friday, October 17.
The Trojans had a slow start to the game and gave up 3 touchdowns to the Patriots in the first half. Even though Matt Abellaneda (Jr.) was able to record an interception in the second quarter, the Trojans remained scoreless going into the second half with a score of 0-19.
In the second half, UHS made its first points of the game with a long 66-yard touchdown pass to running back Allahsan Jenkins (Sr.) from quarterback Wes Jordan (Sr.). Beckman answered with 3 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to make the score 40-7. The Trojans finished the game with a field goal in the 4th quarter from Nick Loveland (So.). The final score of the game was 10-40 with BHS in the lead.
“The game itself was challenging, but I feel that everyone did the best that they could have. Even though the result wasn’t something we could be happy about, I feel like the team as a whole learned something important from this defeat,” said Weitai Sun (Sr.).
Co-captain John Chung (Sr.) said, “We were off to a great start, but later in the game there were just a lot of mistakes that we made both offensively and defensively that made it challenging for us to keep the momentum going. But the only direction we move is forward; we’ll learn from our mistakes and prepare our heart out for our remaining three games.”
The Varsity football team is 3-4 overall and 0-2 in league play so far this season. UHS’s next game is away against Corona del Mar High School on Friday, October 24.
