On January 13, the University High School boys basketball team faced off against Beckman High School (BHS) in a tightly matched battle at home. It was a close game the entire way and the Trojans tied the game 73-73, but ultimately lost in overtime to a final score of 85-92. The loss brought UHS’s league record to 0-2, and its overall record to 7-8.
The first quarter was evenly matched, but the Patriots hit two three-point plays toward the end of the period to bring them up by four going into the second quarter. UHS was not discouraged, however, and held BHS to 12 points the entire second quarter to take a 37-34 lead at halftime. The third quarter was hard fought by both teams, but UHS scraped out a two point advantage to take a five point lead entering the fourth quarter. BHS finished out the fourth period with intensity, and was able to come back and tie the game. In the overtime period, the Trojans were unable to form a strong offense while the Patriots dominated, and BHS would go on to win the game by seven points.
Ray Gong (Jr.) said, “It’s still early in season but it feels like we are a family, and it’s great to have been together for so long. We still have places we need to improve, but we’re anticipating some good league wins.”
