UHS’s varsity baseball team played in the Foothill Tournament from March 5 through March 13. Over the 8 days, the team lost a count of five games. This was a challenging tournament for the Trojans; they hope to keep improving and to play well when league starts.
UHS’s first game was predicted to be the hardest game of the year. Trojans played Mission Viejo High School, a top 10 prospect, with a pitcher throwing up to 90 miles per hour. The Trojans lost 2-12 after managing to get two runs in the last inning. Eric Brunst (Sr.) led off the inning with a double and then Chris Kawata (Sr.) walked to get on first, while Jacob Collins got a base hit to drive in the two runs.
The next game was against Ayala High School and the Trojans lost 0-5. This team was an extremely challenging opponent. Max Juang (Jr.) said, “They had a really good guy on the mound and although we lost, we can put this one behind us because we battled and showed that we are capable of facing one of the top pitchers in the nation.”
UHS fell against Newport Harbor High School, 5-8. At the bottom of the seventh inning, Newport scored several runs to secure their victory.
The fourth game was against Paramount High School with a final score of 3-5. The first four innings were dominated by the Trojans who led 2-0. After the fifth inning, Paramount squeezed in five runs to win the game.
The last game was the closest game, against Tustin High School, however, the Trojans lost 3-4. In the first few innings, UHS seemed to be securing a victory. The game was knotted up at 3 to 3 and went to extra innings. Tustin capitalized on their opportunities and won the game in the 8th inning by driving in the winning run.
UHS baseball played its first league game on Friday, March 20 against Woodbridge.
