On Friday, May 8, UHS track and field competed in Pacific Coast League finals. Girls varsity placed 2nd and boys varsity placed 6th.
Of the multiple UHS athletes, eight runners qualified for CIF prelims. Carmel Lee (Jr.) ran the 400m with a time of 1:00:10, placing 2nd. Not only did Lee qualify for this event, but her 4 X 400 relay with Sarah Stern (Sr.), Caroline Werth (Sr.) and Paige Metayer (Fr.) also qualified for CIF after placing first at league finals with a 4:05.24. However, the team running at CIF will include Stern, Lee, Sofya Ogunseitan (Jr.) and Janine Bryant (So.). Lee just began track last year and said, “It’s been an honor to run for UHS, I love all the people and memories I have made.”
Werth qualified for CIF for her long and triple jump. At finals she jumped a 16-07.75 long jump and a 35-06.00 triple jump. Werth ended up finishing at finals 3rd in long jump and 2nd in triple jump. Melissa Lee (Jr.) qualified for CIF at finals for discus by throwing a 108-09 and shot-put for throwing a 32-10.25.
Julian Ricci (So.), ended first at finals in the triple jump with a 41-01.75 which secured him a place in CIF.
Lastly, Metayer placed first at finals for her 59.15 400M and 2:16.33 for her 800M, in addition to being on the winning 4 x 400 relay team. She qualified for CIF in all three events but due to prior engagements will not be able to attend. Metayer said, “I can’t wait to continue playing soccer and running track in high school, and I hope I can be good enough at some point to play in college.”
Other medalists at league include Vedavit Shetty (So.), who placed 2nd in boys triple jump with a 40-10.00.
The runners who qualified for CIF prelims will run on Saturday, May 16 at Trabuco Hills High School.
