Boys Water Polo claimed its first league victory in the Game of the Week (GOW) against Northwood High School (NHS) following a tough loss to Beckman High School (BHS).
The game against BHS was one of missed opportunities. The team was not successful at scoring and the defense was sub-par. As a result, BHS was able to capitalize on UHS’s errors and build a solid lead, resulting in a 12-18 loss for the Trojans.
The game against NHS was a success, although it had its ups and downs. The Trojans ended the first quarter with a 3-0 lead. However, by the end of the second quarter, they were losing 4-6. The third quarter ended with an 8-8 tie. The teams were tied at the end of the fourth quarter as well, with a score of 11-11. By the end of overtime, the Trojans emerged victorious, capturing their first league victory with a score of 13-12.
Jacob Ghahremani (Sr.) and Daniel Campanaro (Jr.) were the stars of the effort against NHS with 5 goals apiece. Kian Abolhoda (Sr.) also contributed another great performance as goalkeeper, holding the Timberwolves to one goal in two overtime periods.
The supportive crowd present at the GOW certainly motivated the Trojans. Caleb Brown (Sr.) said, “When the game comes down to those clutch moments, there’s nothing better than to have a huge crowd cheering on your team.”
Reflecting on the game, Ghahremani said, “Our team did a great job scoring goals and giving it our 100 percent.” But, he added, the team still has room for growth. “One thing we can improve on is our press defense. We let the other team shoot way too often.”
The Trojans will look to build off of their recent success in their upcoming matches against Corona Del Mar High School on October 27 and against Irvine High School on October 29.
